HEINEKEN® Symphonic Rocks reveals another stellar line-up as ticket sales open

HEINEKEN®

Cape Town, 20 June 2012: HEINEKEN® and MACSTANLEY frontman, Andy Mac, have once again teamed up to bring the iconic music sensation, HEINEKEN® Symphonic Rocks to the South African music scene massive. Following the runaway success of the 2010 and 2011 event, this year’s eagerly anticipated show promises to deliver even more excitement, entertainment and, of course, pure unbridled talent. Ticket sales open this week, offering the first peak at a show-stopping line-up.

HEINEKEN® Symphonic Rocks is a world class, cross-genre live music show ranging from rock to pop, adult contemporary, R&B, hip hop, electro and soul, all set against the breath-taking onstage backing of a 65-piece symphonic orchestra. The impressive list of artists this year includes award-winning MiCasa and Zahara, fresh from their successes at the 2012 SAMA’s; Tumi & the Volume, Freshly Ground’s Zolani and Just Jinjer’s Ard Matthews, all of whom wowed audiences at the show last year; as well as the soulful ChianoSky and pop-rock band MACSTANLEY, back on tour after recording their third, soon-to-be-released album.

In addition, the 2012 show will also offer unique performances from the multi-award winning Van Koke Cartel and Afrikaans Rock superstars F*ofpolisiekar; electro-pop singing sensation, Toya Delazy; and finally, popular rock hit-makers, aKING.

The audience can expect to hear a range of almost 30 hit songs, each painstakingly rearranged by John Walton from the Cape Town Pops Orchestra. Each band or singer will be backed by 22 violins, 8 violas, 6 cellos, 4 double bases and a harp, and that’s just the string section! Also on stage will be full woodwind, brass and percussion sections.

Mac had spent six years working on the concept for the show which became a reality in 2010 when HEINEKEN® came on board. “HEINEKEN® Symphonic Rocks is a marriage between current cutting-edge music and the incredible pitch perfect depth and richness of a traditional orchestra. The collaboration produces an intensity of sound that has to be experienced to be believed,” he explains. “Each year we aim to include chart-topping musicians with wide appeal and unlimited talent, and we’ve gone above and beyond this again this year.”

HEINEKEN® marketing manager, Tjeerd Veldhuis, agrees and believes that the event perfectly complements the brand’s aim to bring unparalleled live music experiences to consumers. “HEINEKEN® is constantly striving to make memorable experiences possible for consumers. As the most international, premium beer, it is designed to push boundaries and we never tire of looking for innovative channels to bring the brand truth to life,” he says.

“HEINEKEN® Symphonic Rocks is the ideal fit for this kind of thinking and links to our ‘Open Your World’ campaign. The event has consistently proved its worth as a quality live music event like no other and we are immensely proud of this unique partnership. Audiences should be prepared to be blown away.”

Press Release, 14th July 2011

Popular demand sees Symphonic Rocks expanding into Johannesburg in 2011

The first-ever Symphonic Rocks in Cape Town in 2010 was a runaway success – and now this superbly entertaining mixture of contemporary and classical music extends its reach in 2011 with shows in both the Mother City and Johannesburg.

Presented by Heineken® in association with 5FM, this year’s Symphonic Rocks feature a cross-genre mix (from rock to pop, adult contemporary, R&B, hip hop and electro) of some of South Africa’s most popular artists. These include the impressively versatile Arno Carstens, R&B star, Loyiso, Ard Matthews of Just Jinjer, popular rock outfits CrashCarBurn and Zebra and Giraffe, critically acclaimed hip-hop outfit, Tumi & The Volume and Cape Town’s Flat Stanley. The country’s top-selling group of 2010, Locnville, will be part of the Symphonic Rocks Johannesburg’s line-up as will Freshlyground’s extraordinary vocalist, Zolani Mahola.

Symphonic Rocks is the brainchild of Flat Stanley’s frontman, Andy Mac who innovated the event in 2010. Last year saw Just Jinjer, Louise Carver, Watershed, aKING& Gang of Instrumentals playing their best known and loved songs together with a 65-piece symphony orchestra.

The concert was an unprecedented success, selling out and stimulating demand for Symphonic Rocks presented by Heineken® in association with 5FM in other cities.

In response to this, the 2011 event again takes place at The Grand Arena Grand West Casino in Cape Town on 1 October before moving onto The Big Top Arena, Carnival City for the first-ever Johannesburg event on October 7th.

Mac, who had been dreaming up and planning the event for six years, was overwhelmed at the response to the first Symphonic Rocks and is buzzed about what lies in store for music fans this year.

“Last year it was incredible to see the collaborative process at work between the pop and rock musicians and their classical counterparts,” Mac says. “The many months of work that goes into scoring the orchestral arrangements for all the Artists is pretty intense, but witnessing the audience and Artists themselves experiencing these songs in a way they never have before is worth every ounce of effort!”

Ashley Poezyn-Small, Marketing Manager at Heineken®, says the event is part of Heineken®’s belief in bringing unexpected live music experiences to consumers. “Heineken® understands the human instinct for sharing in unique premium events that really live up to their promise of being memorable,” says Poezyn-Small.

“Heineken® is proud to offer this to music fans of all genres – not only Cape Town but this year also in Johannesburg.”

With a line-up of chart-topping and acclaimed artists, together with the incredible talents of the symphony orchestra, and an ice-cold Heineken® within easy reach, Symphonic Rocks presented by Heineken® in association with 5FM has all the makings of being the musical highlight of the year.

  • Tickets cost R225 in Cape Town and R225, R250 and R275 in Joburg and booking is open at Computicket. Capacity at each of the venues is limited so fans are advised to book in advance.
