Tickets to the second iteration of Symphonic Rocks, which this year boasts performances in both Johannesburg and Cape Town, are in high demand. This should see artists such as Zebra and Giraffe, Crash Car Burn, Arno Carstens, Loyiso, Tumi and the Volume and MACSTANLEY performing with the support of a full symphony orchestra to capacity crowds at Grand West Arena West Casino in Cape Town and The Big Top Arena at Carnival City in Johannesburg.Presented by Heineken® in association with 5FM, this year’s line-up will feature a mixture of some of South Africa’s most popular artists representing a variety of genres including R&B, Rock and Pop. Additional performers include 2010 bestselling twin brothers Locnville and Zolani Mahola of Freshlyground for the Johannesburg event.According to Andy Mac, who is also the frontman for well-known Pop/Rock Cape Town outfit MACSTANLEY (formerly Flat Stanley), organisation running up to the event has been going smoothly and early ticket sales suggest that Heineken® Symphonic Rocks 2011 is set to build upon the success of Symphonic Rocks 2010.

“We are incredibly pleased with how the public has reacted to Symphonic Rocks this time around. Although announcing a Johannesburg date for 2011 was a risk, it was something we felt was necessary judging from the event reception in Cape Town last year. Fortunately, the reception has been great so far and we’re really looking forward to both events.”

Mac added that the orchestral arrangements and logistics behind the event are also going according to plan.

“Thus far we have completed full orchestral arrangements for eight of the nine artists performing at this year’s Heineken Symphonic Rocks event and they are sounding fantastic. All venue technical drawings have been completed and our team of experts are currently working on the hundreds of audio channel layouts, lighting plots and AV content required when delivering a performance of this magnitude.”

“At this moment we are co-ordinating the final aspects behind the production schedule such as artist and orchestra rehearsal and travel schedules. With over 100 performers and crew needing to be flown around the country, accommodated and transported to and from the venues it’s a monumental task, but we’re confident that everything will run according to plan.”

With regards to sales, Mac added that “tickets are selling really well – our advice is not to put off your purchase until the last minute to avoid disappointment”.

The unique match up of chart-topping South African artists and a full symphony orchestra, set against the backdrop of an impressive lighting arrangement with an ice cold Heineken® just an arm’s length away has all the makings of the musical highlight of the year.

· Tickets cost R225 in Cape Town and R225, R250 and R275 in Johannesburg at Computicket. Capacity at each of the venues is limited so fans are advised to book in advance.

Press Release, 14th July 2011

Popular demand sees Symphonic Rocks expanding into Johannesburg in 2011

The first-ever Symphonic Rocks in Cape Town in 2010 was a runaway success – and now this superbly entertaining mixture of contemporary and classical music extends its reach in 2011 with shows in both the Mother City and Johannesburg.

Presented by Heineken® in association with 5FM, this year’s Symphonic Rocks feature a cross-genre mix (from rock to pop, adult contemporary, R&B, hip hop and electro) of some of South Africa’s most popular artists. These include the impressively versatile Arno Carstens, R&B star, Loyiso, Ard Matthews of Just Jinjer, popular rock outfits CrashCarBurn and Zebra and Giraffe, critically acclaimed hip-hop outfit, Tumi & The Volume and Cape Town’s Flat Stanley. The country’s top-selling group of 2010, Locnville, will be part of the Symphonic Rocks Johannesburg’s line-up as will Freshlyground’s extraordinary vocalist, Zolani Mahola.

Symphonic Rocks is the brainchild of Flat Stanley’s frontman, Andy Mac who innovated the event in 2010. Last year saw Just Jinjer, Louise Carver, Watershed, aKING& Gang of Instrumentals playing their best known and loved songs together with a 65-piece symphony orchestra.

The concert was an unprecedented success, selling out and stimulating demand for Symphonic Rocks presented by Heineken® in association with 5FM in other cities.

In response to this, the 2011 event again takes place at The Grand Arena Grand West Casino in Cape Town on 1 October before moving onto The Big Top Arena, Carnival City for the first-ever Johannesburg event on October 7th.

Mac, who had been dreaming up and planning the event for six years, was overwhelmed at the response to the first Symphonic Rocks and is buzzed about what lies in store for music fans this year.

“Last year it was incredible to see the collaborative process at work between the pop and rock musicians and their classical counterparts,” Mac says. “The many months of work that goes into scoring the orchestral arrangements for all the Artists is pretty intense, but witnessing the audience and Artists themselves experiencing these songs in a way they never have before is worth every ounce of effort!”

Ashley Poezyn-Small, Marketing Manager at Heineken®, says the event is part of Heineken®’s belief in bringing unexpected live music experiences to consumers. “Heineken® understands the human instinct for sharing in unique premium events that really live up to their promise of being memorable,” says Poezyn-Small.

“Heineken® is proud to offer this to music fans of all genres – not only Cape Town but this year also in Johannesburg.”

With a line-up of chart-topping and acclaimed artists, together with the incredible talents of the symphony orchestra, and an ice-cold Heineken® within easy reach, Symphonic Rocks presented by Heineken® in association with 5FM has all the makings of being the musical highlight of the year.

  • Tickets cost R225 in Cape Town and R225, R250 and R275 in Joburg and booking is open at Computicket. Capacity at each of the venues is limited so fans are advised to book in advance.
